# Padel Racket Face: Carbon, Fiberglass and Roughness

From carbon weave to 3D texture: how the padel racket face changes touch, precision, spin and durability, with a glossary of the names brands use.
Updated on 2026-10-07

The padel racket face is the sheet that touches the ball, and it decides three things: how much the racket flexes at impact, how much precision the ball has coming off and how much spin you can put on it. Fiberglass flexes more and gives a soft touch; carbon is stiffer and more precise; the finish, whether smooth, sand or 3D texture, sets the friction with the ball. This guide opens up each of those layers, translates the names brands use and shows what wears out first.

## Anatomy of the padel racket face

From the outside, the face looks like a single piece. In fact, it is a sandwich built over the rubber core:

- **Structural fabric.** One or more layers of fiberglass, carbon or both, impregnated with resin. This is what gives the face its stiffness.

- **Paint and varnish.** They cover the fabric, give color and protect the fiber.

- **Surface finish.** It can be smooth, have sand applied to the varnish or have a 3D texture. This is what generates friction with the ball.

- **Holes.** They go through face and core. The rule limits the diameter, but not the quantity.

Below the face is the core, which is the other half of the feel. The guide to [Soft, Medium or Hard EVA rubber](https://racquetrank.com/ca/guides/padel-eva-rubber-soft-medium-or-hard/) deals only with it. The summary of face and core together is in [how to choose a padel racket](https://racquetrank.com/ca/guides/how-to-choose-a-padel-racket/).

## Fiberglass vs. carbon in practice

In one sentence: fiberglass works like a trampoline, carbon works like a board. Fiberglass deforms more and returns the slow ball easily; carbon deforms less and transfers the energy of the stroke with more direction.

Where this shows up on court:

- **Defensive lob and coming off the wall.** Fiberglass helps: the ball rises with little motion.

- **Hard volley at the net.** Carbon wins: the face does not "give" and the ball does not lose direction.

- **Control bandeja.** Carbon gives more depth precision, because the ball leaves at the speed you put on it.

- **Play with little acceleration.** Fiberglass, always.

The best way to see this is to compare rackets from the same mold with different faces. The Adidas Cross It has both versions in a round shape, low balance and 345 to 360 g.

### Adidas Cross It: fiberglass vs. 24K aluminized carbon

The Cross It Team Light uses fiberglass on the face and the frame, and the spec sheet talks about a soft touch and easy ball exit. The Cross It Light uses 24K aluminized carbon, and the spec sheet warns that the stiff face can feel hard to beginners. The core also changes a little, from EVA Soft Performance to EVA Soft Energy, but the main difference is in the sheet.

### Mixed faces

Between the two extremes are the faces that combine fiberglass and carbon. It is the brands' way of giving some precision without losing the easy ball. The Bullpadel XPLO shows this well: the Comfort version uses a Fibrix face, a mix of fiberglass and carbon, in the same 535 cm² geometric mold as the 12K carbon XPLO.

### Bullpadel XPLO: Fibrix face vs. X-Tend Carbon 12K

The Comfort's spec sheet says the ball comes off with less effort; the carbon XPLO's, that it demands a fast arm. Same shape, same MultiEva core: the face is what changes the audience.

## Glossary: the face names brands use

Each brand names its own fabric. The chart translates the names that appear in the [padel racket catalog](https://racquetrank.com/ca/padel/), based on what the spec sheets say.

| Name on the spec sheet | Brand | What it is |
| --- | --- | --- |
| Polyglass | Bullpadel | Fiberglass, in entry-level and junior rackets |
| Glaphite and Fibrix | Bullpadel | Mixed faces; Fibrix combines fiberglass and carbon |
| X-Tend Carbon 3K and 12K | Bullpadel | Carbon, in the Vertex, Neuron and XPLO lines |
| TriCarbon 18K | Bullpadel | 18K carbon of the Hack line |
| Elastic Fiber | Bullpadel | More flexible face of the Cloud versions |
| Carbon Flex | Babolat | Carbon and fiberglass |
| Soft Carbon | Babolat | More flexible 3K carbon twill |
| Hybrid Woven and hybrid carbon | Head | Carbon and fiberglass fabric |
| 2D Carbon | Head | Carbon, on the Speed One X |
| Comfort Flex | Wilson | Fiberglass and carbon |
| ExactTouch | Wilson | 3K carbon with raw fibers that increase friction |
| UD Carbon | Wilson | Unidirectional carbon, combined with fiberglass on the Endure V1 |
| Flex Fiber | Lõk | Carbon mixed with fiberglass |
| Graphite | Dunlop | Common commercial name for carbon fiber |
| Alum, aluminized and Xtrem | Nox, Adidas, Bullpadel | Carbon with a metallic treatment |
| TeXtreme | Drop Shot, Siux, Kuikma | Carbon fabric made of wide, thin tapes |
| Twill and Honeycomb | Drop Shot, Siux | Weave patterns: diagonal twill and honeycomb |

Three of these terms deserve a little more explanation:

- **UD (unidirectional).** Instead of a woven fabric, the strands all run in the same direction. The stiffness is concentrated in that direction, and the manufacturer combines layers at different angles to balance it.

- **TeXtreme.** It is a fabric brand made with open, flattened carbon tapes instead of round strands. The idea is to have thinner, straighter layers.

- **Twill, 45° and Honeycomb.** They describe the weave pattern or the angle of the fibers. They change the look and the distribution of stiffness, but the spec sheet rarely says by how much.

### And the K number?

The K indicates how many thousands of filaments are in each carbon strand: 3K is 3,000, 12K is 12,000. Thicker strands form a bigger weave, visible to the naked eye on unpainted faces. In practice, brands use high K in firmer versions, but resin, number of layers and core weigh as much. The chart from 3K to 18K is in the guide to [rackets for intermediate players](https://racquetrank.com/ca/guides/best-padel-rackets-for-intermediates/); here it is enough to know that K is not a quality scale.

## Roughness: smooth, sand, 3D texture or raw fiber

The rule of the [International Padel Federation](https://www.padelfip.com/wp-content/uploads/2025/12/FIP_Reglas-del-Padel.pdf) says the hitting surface, the same on both faces, can be smooth or rough. In other words, every standard texture from the big brands is allowed, as long as the two faces are the same.

The effect in padel comes from the movement of the racket, which brushes the ball from top to bottom or from the side. Roughness increases friction at that contact and makes the ball slip less on the face. There are four types of finish:

**Smooth.** Matte or glossy, without texture. Less spin, a cleaner touch. Common in entry-level rackets and in some control rackets, like the Head Radical Motion 2024.

**Sand.** Grains applied over the paint or varnish. It gives a moderate effect and is the texture most subject to wear, because it is a thin layer over the face. Siux, for example, describes a "glossy finish with sand" on the Electra Stupa Pro ST3.

**3D texture.** Raised patterns, each brand with its own name: 3D Grain at Bullpadel, 3D Spin+ at Babolat, Spin Blade at Adidas, 3D Spin Lines at Lõk, 3D Face at Drop Shot, Spin² Texture at Wilson. Nox combines texture and sand in the Dual Spin surface.

**Raw fiber.** Instead of applying texture on top, Wilson leaves the carbon fibers with a raw finish in the ExactTouch technology, used in the Endure line.

### When roughness makes a difference

- **Makes a big difference:** bandeja, vibora, sliced serve, short ball with spin (the chiquita) and the smash that needs to rise after the glass.

- **Makes little difference:** flat strokes, defensive lobs and the game of those who do not yet slice the ball.

- **Depends on the ball:** a new ball, with full felt, grips the face better. With a worn ball, the texture makes up for part of the loss.

If you live on bandeja and vibora, roughness and 3D texture go on the priority list. If you are still learning to slice, do not pay extra for it.

## Durability: what wears out first on the face

The face suffers three kinds of wear, and each material reacts in its own way.

**Ball friction.** The texture loses height where the ball hits the most, in the center and a bit above it. Sand is the first to feel it; the 3D texture wears too, but tends to hold up longer. When the racket stops "holding" the ball on the bandeja, the texture is already gone.

**Hits against the glass and the floor.** The frame scraping the floor coming off the wall and a knock against the side glass are the biggest causes of damage. Carbon is stiffer and can crack under concentrated impacts; fiberglass, more flexible, usually tolerates this kind of knock better. The FIP rule allows accessories to limit deterioration and vibration, and the frame protector is the most common. It adds weight to the head, so take that into account on high-balance rackets.

**Fatigue of the whole.** With use, core and face lose some response. The stiff carbon face tends to keep its feel for longer, but what defines the racket's "tiredness" is usually the core.

Tip
To preserve the texture, clean the face with a damp cloth and no abrasive products. Never use sandpaper or a rough sponge to 'renew' the roughness: besides removing the finish, it can expose the fiber. Store the racket in its cover, away from extreme heat.

## Which face for each type of player

**You are in your first year on court.** Fiberglass, smooth or rough surface. The precision of carbon will not show up yet, and the easy ball will.

**You already accelerate, but your arm feels it.** A mixed face or a more flexible-touch carbon, like Babolat's Soft Carbon or the 3K carbon over a soft core of the Drop Shot Axion Comfort. The comparison with the Axion Control 1.0, with 12K TeXtreme carbon and the same core, is in the guide to [best-value padel rackets](https://racquetrank.com/ca/guides/best-value-padel-rackets/).

**You build the point with the bandeja.** Firm-touch carbon and a 3D finish. The stiffness gives predictable depth and the texture holds the slice.

**You close points from above.** Stiff carbon, high-K or TeXtreme, with 3D texture. The options are in [power padel rackets for advanced players](https://racquetrank.com/ca/guides/power-padel-rackets-for-advanced-players/).

**You play a lot and are hard on equipment.** Prefer a face with raised texture instead of sand and use a frame protector from day one.

## Face checklist before buying

- Does the spec sheet state the face material, and not just "composite" or "fiber"?

- If it is carbon, is there information on the type (3K, 12K, UD, TeXtreme) or on a mix with fiberglass?

- Is the surface smooth, sand or 3D? Does that match how many sliced strokes you hit?

- Does the same family have a softer or firmer face version? Compare the two in the [padel racket comparison tool](https://racquetrank.com/ca/compare/padel/).

- Still unsure? The [Find Your Racket quiz](https://racquetrank.com/ca/racquet-finder/) filters by level and style.

## Frequently asked questions

Fiberglass or carbon padel racket: which is better?
It depends on your stroke. Fiberglass flexes more and returns the slow ball easily, so it is better for beginners and for those who hit with little acceleration. Carbon is stiffer and more precise, better for those who already accelerate and want direction on fast balls. Mixed faces sit in the middle.

What do 3K, 12K and 18K mean on a padel racket?
It is the number of carbon filaments in each strand of the fabric, in thousands: 3K has 3,000, 12K has 12,000. Brands usually use high K in firmer versions, but the final stiffness also depends on resin, layers and core. It is not a quality scale.

Is a rough padel racket allowed?
Yes. The International Padel Federation rule allows a smooth or rough surface, as long as both faces are the same. The brands' standard textures, like sand and 3D texture, are within the rule.

Does a padel racket's roughness wear off over time?
It does. The ball wears the texture in the impact zone. Finishes with sand applied over the paint usually lose their effect first; the 3D texture wears too, but tends to last longer. Do not try to renew it with sandpaper.

What is an aluminized face on a padel racket?
It is a carbon or fiberglass face with a metallic treatment. Nox, Adidas and Bullpadel use the feature in several models. Manufacturers claim it makes behavior more stable as temperature varies.

What is TeXtreme carbon?
It is a brand of carbon fabric made with wide, flattened tapes instead of woven round strands. It appears in rackets from Drop Shot, Siux and Kuikma. The idea is to have thinner, straighter layers on the face.
